The Sinclair C5 is an electric vehicle from the early 1980's. It was the first electric bicycle manufactured in mass production.
Simple mechanics and electronics made the C5 not only relatively affordable, but also quite fail-safe and maintainable by almost everybody.
Although the C5 also has some real shortcomings, this may be a reason why it still enjoys a wide popularity among a group of enthusiasts and hobbyists.
However, there is one thing that cannot be repaired: the ULA chip.
This chip (an uncommited logic array) is the "brain" of the vehicle, so to speak. If this chip gets lost or is damaged the C5 still can be used - but without motor supervision and without the characteristic LED display.
The ULA replacement is an electronic unit which replaces the original control chip of the C5 and also offers some additionally features.
This documentation describes the software for the ULA replacement unit.
For more information about the replacement unit see cypax.net.
